What is Prop 65?Updated 3 hours ago

California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition or Prop 65) is a law that applies only to the State of California. This law is intended to inform California residents of the presence of chemicals that may cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Prop 65 requires a list of these chemicals to be publicly available and that companies doing business in California must inform residents about the risk of exposure to these chemicals in their products through warning statements on the product. These Prop 65 notices are seen throughout California in various locations such as, but not limited to, restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, bars, and schools in addition to products found on store shelves. Since Prop 65 was enacted, the list of applicable chemicals has continued to expand. Chemicals are required to be included on the list even if a chemical has not been shown to cause cancer or cause birth defects in humans but does show these effects in animals.
